Re-Cycle is in the midst of a very busy period, currently receiving daily deliveries of bikes from their corporate partner Halfords to send to Africa.  They need more volunteers to help them manage during this really busy time so if you have any spare time available, particularly during May and can offer them some help, please do get in touch.

Their warehouse roles include – unloading deliveries, preparing bikes for shipping, loading containers, dismantling damaged bikes for valuable spare parts and sorting/packing parts for shipment.  All new volunteers will receive a warm welcome from friendly and supportive colleagues.  You will make a valuable contribution to their work and benefit from the satisfaction of being involved with something useful that helps to improve people's life prospects in Africa.

For more information about how to volunteer please go to www.re-cycle.org.  You can find an application form on the “Volunteer” section of the “Get Involved” tab which can be completed and emailed to info@re-cycle.org.

Rovers Grasstrack begain on the 9th May for under 16's and will run every Monday through the Summer except Bank Holidays. Arrive at 6pm for a 6.30 start at Shrub End Sports Centre. Mondays will be a series of Go-Race events, although if you are new to Grasstrack and fixed wheel bikes you will be given help and advice.

The Rovers will also be running sessions for ordinary bikes, keep an eye on their facebook page for details.

Best Foot Forward is a project to encourage and support  Mile End residents to cycle, walk, use public transport and car share for short local journeys to improve their health, air quality and reduce traffic congestion. There are going to be lots of activities over the next 6 months including Bikeability sessions, led rides, highlighting of good routes to key destinations and fun things to do by bike – If you live in or off Mile End Road or Bergholt Road visit the Best Foot Forward website.

There is also a chance to win the latest Fitbit Alta if you complete the online BFF survey. If you don’t live in the area but have friends or family that do please ask them to check BFF out!

If you want something fun to do this half term why not try out the newly relaunched Cycling Centurion Treasure Trail in High Woods country park. You can cycle or walk the trail and there is real treasure at the end once you have completed the trail, working out the clues and the location of the treasure by a process of elimination. There is also a secret code to work out so that you can get into the treasure when you find it!  If you give it a go, we would really welcome your feedback.

The Bike Club - This month we came across a great scheme which makes so much sense. With the speed that kids grow out of bikes and the associated cost of buying a decent light weight bike, it is tempting to buy them a bike to ‘grow into’ This doesn’t necessarily equate to a comfortable and enjoyable ride for your child and could put them off cycling altogether.  The Bike Club is a new kids bike hire scheme. You get a good quality, lightweight , right sized bike for your child in exchange for a monthly hire fee. As soon as they grow out of the bike, you exchange it for a new one that is the right size. Prices range from £5 - £15 a month and there are opportunities to buy the bike after 24 or 30 months for a minimal cost.

Bikes range from Balance Bikes to Junior road and cyclo cross bikes. Find out more from The Bike Club website
