June is when nationally the country celebrates cycling with Bike Week 11 – 19 June. Here at Cycle Colchester we promote cycling all year around however June is when our busy season of attending summer events really begins
So this month there are plenty of opportunities to get your bike checked out, to take part in bike themed children’s activities and to ask lots of questions about cycling if you visit one of our cycling stalls at local events. Check the ‘upcoming events’ for dates
National Cycling charity CTC has changed its name to Cycling UK and is coordinating hundreds of activities across the UK in June to encourage people back onto a bike. Locally Cycling UK will have led rides for all ages and ability throughout June and July.
Wivenhoe Bike Kitchen are offering two beginners Bike Maintenance workshops in June. One focused on brakes and another on gears.
Colchester Rovers are running a time trial for beginners as part of Bike Week on the 22 June
We have just updated and revamped our Get On Your Bike leaflet with lots of new information.
The Bike Week theme this year is Cycle to Work, if you want to give it a try this year you could sign up to Love To Ride to log your rides plus there are prizes to be won. We will also be organising ADULT cycle confidence sessions.
If you need some flexible part time work and would enjoy teaching children to cycle safely, Safer Essex Roads Partnership are looking for people willing to train as Bikeability instructors.
Cycling UK (former CTC) want to encourage everybody to take part in a cycling event particularly during Bike Week. Their led rides in Colchester will take place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and welcomes all ages, abilities and families.
Adult cycle confidence sessions - to improve practical skills for cycling on the road. If you are interested in some short sessions to help you cycle more confidently, we will be organising sessions in the coming months. We are also pleased to launch the 2016 version of our Get On Your Bike leaflet. It has had a revamp as well as an update and now includes fun activities by bike and information about where you can get help to fix your bike.
Cycle Colchester will be at three events during June - Saturday 11 Young Children's Festival in Castle Park (note no Dr Bike for this one) New Town Community fun day on the 18 June and alongside the Colchester Bike Kitchen at The BIG Sunday on the 19 June
18 and 25 June Beginners Bike Maintenance Courses at Wivenhoe Bike Kitchen - Places are limited. Learn to adjust, check and love your brakes at a 2 hour course on Saturday 18 June in the morning and ditto for your gears on Saturday 25 June. Get in touch via the Wivenhoe Bike Kitchen facebook page for more information and to book, £5 or, for concessions, pay what you can.
22 June - Rovers beginners 10 mile time trial. 18:45 start from HQ Peldon Village Hall. Arrive and sign on from 1800.
Monday evenings - Rovers - Grasstrack for ages up to 16 with Go-Race events continue every Monday excluding bank holidays at 6pm at Shrub End Sports Centre. Inductions are available for those new to Grasstrack and some free wheel sessions will also be available on some evenings – check the Rovers Youth facebook group.
Part time work opportunity - ECC need more Bikeability instructors to deliver Bikeability in schools across the county and for courses such as those we offer in the school holidays. If you would like to know more look at this poster.

2 July – Fete on the Field, Wivenhoe - Cycle Colchester will join forces with the Wivenhoe Bike Kitchen to offer cycling activities and bike health checks.
9 July – Greenstead community fun day Cycling UK and Cycle Colchester will be at the Greenstead community fun day
Every week in JULY 7.30pm to 9pm, Wednesdays are for Women! Drop in session with Jo at the Wivenhoe Bike Kitchen - find out how to keep your bike running smoothly, basic repairs and adjustments. WBK are actively seeking women volunteers so it's a chance to find out more about what's involved.
