October 2015 news

Julian Greaves, keen cyclist and Colchester CycleTech mobile bike mechanic talks to us this month about his passion for cycling.

As the evenings draw in we thought it a good opportunity to remind everyone about the importance of lights and high viz and to highlight the sessions Sustrans and Cycle Colchester are offering schools and the University to promote being seen.

October is a month of updates on last month so…

More information is available about the closure of the Wivenhoe Trail.

Find out what new cafes have joined the Cake Escape this month, including another Colchester cafe.

A reminder about ECC’s cycling strategy consultation which ends 30 October.

Dates, times and venues have been confirmed for our pilot Bikeability sessions during the October half term, if you and/or your kids want some training, check them out.

Colchester Bike Kitchen tells us more about its plans to expand to two Saturdays a month

Being Seen

It is getting to that time of year when the evenings are drawing in and you might find yourself cycling in the dark more often. If you haven’t used your lights for a while, now’s the time to check that the batteries still work!  If you haven’t got any lights, visit one of our friendly local independent bike shops to purchase some. Lights might be a legal requirement but we highly recommend as much high viz clothing as you can manage as well to make sure you can be seen clearly by other road users.

Schools

Sustrans are working with schools to help make sure pupils are safe on the “darker journeys to school”.  If you would like Sustrans to come to your school to promote the BE BRIGHT AND BE SEEN message to one (or two) of your assemblies, ask your head teacher to contact Aba Pifferi or ring 0758 408 7182  to arrange a time and date.

Sustrans activities and events are FREE and have been funded by ECC’s Sustainable Transport department.

University of Essex

Two ‘See Me’ sessions are on offer to University of Essex staff and students on the 28 October and 4 November, where you can learn a basic bike safety check, find out about the UK law on riding at night and get advice about riding in the dark and in winter. Find out more on the University website.

Bikeability

Would you like to improve your confidence riding in town centre traffic?
Do you worry about taking your children cycling on the road?
Did your children miss their Bikeability training at school?

We can confirm we are running Bikeability sessions in partnership with Essex County Council at Thomas Lord Audley school on the 27 and 29 October.

We will run all three levels which are ideal for adults and children. Find out more about both Bikeability and the sessions we are running.

Wivenhoe Trail temporary closure

The latest update we have is that the closure will be between the 5th and 16th October.

You can keep up to date with diversions and latest information via Sustrans website and if you still have any queries contact Kris.Radley@sustrans.org.uk Sustrans Greater Essex Area Manager

The Cake Escape – New cafes

Last month we gave you some background on The Cake Escape, a fun way to combine cycling with visiting beautiful places around Essex and stopping at bike friendly cafes. Two new cafes have joined the cake escape since our last update, Owls Hill Tearoom in Terling, but good news closer to home, Café Deli-Licious at the Roman Circus has just signed up.  This makes 4 Colchester based café’s alongside Leisure World, The Filling Station café and the Oaktree coffee shop. If we can get one more local café to sign up it will be possible to take part in the Cake Escape locally and get enough stamps to claim your free slice of cake!

So again if you know a local bike friendly café, let them know about The Cake Escape and if you haven’t checked it out yourself, we suggest you do!

Colchester Bike Kitchen

Colchester Bike Kitchen is growing in popularity and has now decided that from November they will change to a Saturday and open twice a month. Read more from Mike Polom about what the Bike Kitchen offers and the new opening times.
