We’re sorry to say that there’s no interview this month, instead we’ve got a bumper edition of the newsletter with contributions from Clean Air Colchester, Love to Ride, Safer Essex Roads, ColVelo and VC Revolution cycling clubs, Wivenhoe and Colchester Bike Kitchens and much more. We’ve also got our usual interesting links, and a few last minute gift ideas… you better be quick though as it’s not long to go now!
Air Quality Survey
Have you filled out the Clean Air for Colchester survey yet? Share your thoughts on air quality in Colchester and bust some myths while you’re at it – you might surprise yourself! Take a moment to watch the Be Part of the Change video below too…
Winter Wheelers from Love to Ride
Join the Winter Wheelers, sort of like a cycling advent calendar, and be in with a chance of winning all sorts of great prizes including daily giveaways, bikes and £1250 of local bike shop vouchers! Just sign up on the Love to Ride website and see how your rides measure up against other Essex residents.
Let’s Look Out with Safer Essex Roads
Safer Essex Roads are encouraging everyone to look out for each other on our roads. This means looking out for cyclists and pedestrians, and making yourself nice and visible on your bike over the darker winter months. Lights? Check. Light coloured clothing? Check. Ride positively and decisively? Check. Signal clearly, take the lane, and look out for each other and we’ll all be safe on the roads.
Look out for the Safer Essex Roads team at Colchester schools throughout the coming months starting with St Helena in December and then the Gilberd in January.
St Helena Cycle Challenge
Fancy a BIG cycling challenge? St Helena Hospice have an opportunity to ride 500km across Vietnam and Cambodia in February 2021, all while raising money for the charity. It’s a big undertaking, but the whole trip is over 12 days and there’s plenty of chances for sightseeing along the way to make it a truly unforgettable experience. Read more in their FAQ [Word] and the adventure itinerary [PDF].
If that sounds like a challenge too far then you may be interested in the St Helena London 2 Cambridge Cycle on 26th July 2020. This 60 mile route follows cycle paths from Picketts Lock just north of Camden to Jesus Green, Cambridge. It’s a signed and marshalled route with no registration fee, but the minimum sponsorship is £150. Find out more in their FAQ [Word]
Colchester Bike Kitchen are open as usual over the Christmas period, but have decided to take a break on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day (fair enough, we think!) They still have a couple of spots left for their Introduction to Essential Bike Maintenance class on Saturday 21st December – maybe the perfect chance for parents to brush up on their skills before Santa drops a new bike down the chimney? Find out more and book your space on the CBK website.
Wivenhoe Bike Kitchen is open every Monday 7-9pm and Sunday 2-4pm over the winter, but will be closed on 29th and 30th December
Colchester-based VC Revolution Cycling Club will be holding their annual Christmas Jumper club run on Saturday 21 December from Colchester with refreshments, food and a song or two in The Haywain pub in Little Bromley. The club organises regular rides, including their weekly Saturday club run, which meets in Colchester for an approximate 35-mile loop with a café stop. Further details can be found on the club’s website www.vcrcyclingclub.uk or via Twitter @VC_Revolution.
ColVelo Cycling Collective are really pleased to share that alongside their riding this year they’ve raised over £200 for Colchester Food Bank and St Helena Hospice through donations at their popular live race screenings. If you’re into your bike racing then look out for screenings of Milan-Sanremo, Paris-Roubaix and the World Championships on the big screen at the Queen Street Brewhouse throughout 2020. Keep up to date on their Facebook page or via Twitter @ColveloCC
