Winstree Rd Update

A Winstree Rd- Community Led Street Design Project Update from Sustrans…
We’ve been working hard with Essex County Council and Essex Highways to get all the plans in place for our first round of on-street trials on Winstree Rd and very soon we’ll be revealing details of these locations, as well as the accompanying engagement activity taking place at each trial site!

We can already announce that the street kit (a flexible interlinking modular form) has now arrived in Stanway and will be installed on carriageway at three locations along Winstree Rd, for a period of two weeks, w/c Monday 11th November.

These trial sites have each been identified in direct response to feedback given during our first round of pop-up community engagements and will begin to address some of the key concerns expressed by street users, which included bad parking, vehicle congestion and pedestrian safety.

The on-street trials will also provide the perfect opportunity to collect feedback and voting on design ideas for the next round of longer term trials in Spring 2020. There will be plenty of chances to get involved and have your say, so please do come along and share your thoughts!

For more details on locations and engagement activities, keep an eye on @Sustrans_East, facebook.com/sustranseastofengland, or contact Willow Mitchell on willow.mitchell@sustrans.org.uk.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Follow them on social media for updates, and you can check out some photos from the event on their twitter feed.

How to stop your bike from being stolen with Cycling UK
It goes without saying but having your bike nicked is rubbish. 288,000 bicycles are stolen every year in England and Wales so if yours does get half-inched then you’re certainly not alone. Cycle thefts are down 54% from 1995 but that’s not much comfort when you’re missing your pride and joy. Cycling UK have some tips and tricks on how to best protect your bike and give a would-be thief a hard time, and hopefully make them think twice. The important message is to always report a theft.

Things we’ve found
Stabilisers be gone! Balance bikes are the best way for children to learn to ride. Cycling UK have a handy video to show you how to get your kids riding quickly and simply.

Investing in walking and cycling is key to helping people achieve new physical activity guidelines. “well duh” you might say (and so would we) but there’s more to it than that. Sustrans have a great article with all the detail.

How do you breathe less pollution on the school run? Do literally anything other than drive, basically. Your car is mainlining exhaust fumes into your cabin. This study in Sheffield has some pretty alarming results.
